Many argued whether the white powder might be due to a nearby dust storm that has traveled into other areas. Others thought it was simply be pollen as the season changes, whilst some hilariously declared that earth has now got a “whole new season.”
The West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection and local authorities are analyzing the particles. A state lab in West Virginia, where an apparent “fireball” was spotted a few years ago, will test the dust to know whether they match that of the Texas and New Mexico dust storms.
Satellite picturess also suggest that the dust could have traveled due to high winds. This report comes as a derecho storm approaches the central US states. Officials from the Maryland Department of the Environment have since indicated that the substance is likely from the dust storm.
Others claims that a “small plane” is flying over Maryland and dropping the substance. Some theorized that the substance could be a residue from the freight train derailment in Ohio. The train was moving toxic chemicals and when 38 of the carriages derailed, a fire started in 12 or more of the cars. The train was carrying vinyl chloride.
However, Terry Fletcher, from the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection, said that there is no correlation between the train incident and the white powder.
