Emmanuel Macron, the President of france, was a special guest at a ceremony commemorating the return of looted treasures to Benin.
The known “Abomey Treasures” are a collection of 26 artefacts taken from the African country Benin by the French soldiers 129 years ago.
The relics, which include wooden anthropomorphic figurines, regal thrones, and religious altars, are on display at the Musée du quai Branly-Jacques Chirac for one last time in France before being returned in November.
The return of the objects to their country of origin, according to Emmanuel Macron, would bring togetherness between the two countries.
We are creating new possibilities rather than entrenching old divisions with this repatriation. Horizons of cooperation, transformation, and sharing, and it is in this spirit that we, along with our Beninese colleagues, have pledged this historically significant return.
The artifacts will be housed in a museum in Abomey, which however is partially supported by the French government.
