
In the hunt for a cybercrime group linked to Russia, the US is offering a $10 million reward. DarkSide, according to the FBI, was behind the cyber attack on the Colonial Pipeline in May.
The United States State Department announced a reward of up to $10 million on Thursday 4th November 2021, this reward is for information leading to the identify or location of anyone with a major leadership position in DarkSide. This reward is prior to the previous reward of $10m on the location of anybody who engages in hostile cyber activities against U.S. vital infrastructure.
DarkSide is cybercrime organization based in Russia, and according to the FBI, who said that Darkside was behind the May cyber attack on the Colonial Pipeline, which resulted in a days-long outage that caused a jump in gas prices, panic purchasing, and localized fuel shortages in the United States Southeast.
The State Department also announced a $5 million prize for information leading to the arrest or conviction of anyone attempting to participate in a DarkSide ransomware event in any country around the globe.
In granting this reward, the US demonstrates its commitment to defending ransomware victims around the world from cyber criminals.
The Colonial Pipeline claims it paid the hackers roughly $5 million in Bitcoin in exchange for access to its networks. In June, the US Justice Department recovered around $2.3 million of the ransom.
