President Muhammadu Buhari had lauched Nigeria’s digital currency on October 25 with the hope, boosting cross-border trade and other financial activity.

what is plagiarizing?

plagiarizing is the process of converting or changing someone else’s work usually writings as your own and publishing the work. This plagiarizing is done with automated tools. This is usually known as an illegal act just as copying as no permission is collected from the owner. Plagiarism is treated as ethical shortcomings and is also considered illegal and penalised in many jurisdictions countries because it violates intellectual property rights.

Gazette reports that the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) was detected on the eNaira website saying they had plagiarizied the privacy policy and conditions of use page texts from an American JLG Website. Despite having four years to plan, checks on the eNaira website by Peoples Gazette revealed how Africa’s largest economy’s digital currency (enaira) policy page was copied from JLG’s website.

The JLG poily says;

In no event will licensor or its officers, directors, employees, agents, representatives, affiliates or contractors (collectively, the “released parties”), be liable to licensee or any third party for any use, interruption, delay, or inability to use the software’ lost revenues or profits; delays, interruption or loss of services, business, or goodwill; loss or corruption of data; loss resulting from the system or system service failure, malfunction, or shutdown; failure to accurately transfer, read or transmit information,” the document read on JLG’s website.

A thorough investigation revealed that a portion of CBN’s website’s limitation of liability provision was copied precisely from a JLG Website, a wireless innovation business situated in McConnellsburg, Pennsylvania USA.

The Enaira policy website limitation of liability provision reads

In no event will the CBN or its directors, officers, employees, independent contractors, affiliates or agents, or any of its or their respective service providers, be liable to you or any third party for any use, interruption, delay or inability to use the eNaira website, lost revenues or profits, delays, interruption or loss of services, business or goodwill, loss or corruption of data, loss resulting from system or system service failure, malfunction or shutdown, failure to accurately transfer…

With checks on the two Policy, we could see the similarities in the two. Nigerian Central bank had refused to comment on the topic and Nigeria had always been cause about this act as many European countries take the Infringement seriously. Nigerian President Buhari have been caught at times plagiarizing barack Obama quotes and many other world leaders. Plagiarizing is usually used by news blogs and article writers sometimes to present an idea.

But this is the not first time the CBN has been found exploiting someone else’s work without credit to the owner. Lamido Sanusi, the country’s then-governor in 2012, was caught stealing quotes from an American academic without attribution. Later, the bank admitted to misconduct and blamed it on a speechwriter. Sanusi had also plagiarized Mr Dike’s intellectual effort and presented it as his own without proper acknowledgement.

Mr Sanusi was defended by the apex bank in a statement issued by its former corporate communications chief Isaac Okoroafor, who stated that he did not develop the speech himself.

In the case of the CBN, such papers, even though presented by the Governor, represent our collective views and are prepared by professional researchers in the relevant departments of the Bank. We can vouch that such papers are prepared in line with strict global and ethical standards.

The Enaira have had problems since it’s launch and even before it’s launch. The lauched was scheduled previously on the Oct 1 but however was rescheduled because of another Infringement claim by Enaira payment solution who had filed a restraining order on Nigeria for using the name as he said is already a registered trademark. A notice from the film’s proprietor ask the Name enaira not be used in any way.

It’s a very serious allegation against the Central Bank.

There should be internal administrative action on the persons responsible for the policy document as it shows that the Central Bank had no original thought

Mr Effiong told The Gazette on Thursday afternoon.
