West Side Story, the movie directed by Steven Spielberg, was a critical darling but a box office flop. It made about $4.1 million on opening day held on December 10th and is expected to make between $10 and $11 million for the weekend.
There are many theories on why West side story had failed but one have been circulating online without much evidence. This was that Ansel himself may have kept people at a distance due to sexual misconduct allegations against him.

Even if the Ansel thing isn’t true, there’s a lot of giddiness going on.
The story
West side story was accused of sexual assaulting a woman who claimed she was 17 when she had sex with him in 2014. She claims she felt violated and now has PTSD. Ansel denied her characterization in a since-deleted message.
Other women have accused him of being predatory and soliciting minors before he became famous, but he hasn’t addressed those specifically. In any case, his casting as Spielberg’s lead was widely criticized.
It was too late to get someone else because the allegation came out in 2020, after Ansel had been cast and even after the film had wrapped. So far, Spielberg and co. haven’t addressed the issue… and all signs point to silence.
