On Tuesday night November 23rd, a SpaceX rocket launched on a self-destruction mission to save the Earth!
NASA had hired Elon Musk’s rocket business to launch a Falcon 9 rocket on a nearly year-long voyage to an asteroid. DART is expected to crash into Dimorphos, a 525-foot-wide asteroid, at a speed of 15,000 mph.
Scientists hope to investigate if the impact can shift the asteroid’s track, which could save lives if it tries to hit our planet Earth.
The DART stands for Double Asteroid Redirection Test in which spacecraft launched from the Vandenberg Space Force Base in California… and it’s all a knockoff of Armageddon.
They say the asteroid will not be destroyed… but to alter its orbit. The mission is deemed a success if the asteroid moves for at least 73 seconds.
