The US President Joe Biden had finally meet with Pope Francis in the Vatican on Friday for a personal and political audience, ahead of the G-20 Leaders conference on the global economy in Rome, followed by a summit on climate change in Glasgow, Scotland.
This isn’t just a meeting between two powerful guys who have millions of supporters and at least as many detractors. While the meeting will be mostly personal, National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said on Thursday 28th that it would also cover critical policy topics. The two will discuss working together on efforts grounded in respect for fundamental human dignity, including ending the COVID-19 pandemic, tackling the climate crisis, and caring for the poor, according to the White House. They will be joined by first lady Jill Biden on the meeting on Friday being today.
Monsignor Leonardo Sapienza, the head of the Papal Household, greeted President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden. At Around noon, the first couple had a private encounter with Pope Francis before attending a larger delegate meeting, which included Secretary of State Antony Blinken, National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan, and White House Deputy Chief of Staff Jen O’Malley Dillon all from the United States.
The White House has declined to clarify whether Biden will receive Holy Communion from Pope Francis, a contentious issue amid calls for a Catholic president who supports abortion to be prevented from receiving the communion.
That’s something that’s quite personal, as you can imagine,Karine Jean-Pierre, the Principal Deputy Press Secretary, told VOA aboard Air Force One en route to Rome.
His faith is a deeply personal matter for him. I don’t have anything to say about that right now.”
As he has sought over the years to reconcile his deep Roman Catholic religion with his obligation to lead an obviously secular government, Biden will almost certainly address questions of gender, sexuality, and reproduction.
Pope Francis, who sits perpetually behind the president’s shoulder in a framed portrait that overlooks the Oval Office, once led the Biden family through personal pain.
According to administration officials, the two have already met three times and exchanged letters, and Biden has met with both of Pope Francis’ predecessors. According to Biden, the pope took time to speak with the future president and his family during a visit to the United States in 2015, not long after the loss of Biden’s son, Beau.
