The Kwara State police personnel have been warned against checking citizens’ phones and laptops in all sections of the state.
The command’s Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Okasanmi Ajayi had released a statement in Ilorin Kwara State, this was on Thursday, November 4, he condem the reported indiscriminate probing of the telephone handsets and laptops of suspected online fraudsters by police on stop and search duty.
According to the statement, the Commissioner of Police, Kwara State Police Command, CP Tuesday Assayomo, is outraged by reports that police officers in the state are conducting random searches of pricey phone handsets and laptops of young people accused of being internet fraudsters. Assayomo had said that such behavior is not allowed for the police officers.
The CP has thus prohibited police officers from randomly checking people’s phones and laptops, unless the phone and laptop are the result of an investigation authorised by the commissioner of police personally.
Members of the public are hereby advised to report any contravention of this order to the Commissioner of Police through the following dedicated phone numbers.
