Various popular websites and apps ban content that could be described as NSFW, and it is likely to cause a fair amount of confusion if you mistakenly use the phrase in place of NFS in a text message or post.
NFS should not be confused with a similar modern-day acronym, NRS, which stands for “no replies” and is used to indicate that a user is about to embark on a period of inactivity online.
ALTERNATIVE MEANINGS OF NFS
Of course, with all unofficial internet lingo, there is multiple meanings attached to each phrase, which can be pretty confusing at times.
NFS is most times alternatively used to mean “new friends” as in, as this Twitter user put it: “I want nfs anybody on here wanna be friends ?”.
NFS MEANING IS NOT TO BE CONFUSED WITH NSFW
One pretty crucial clarification that should be made is that NFS should not be confused with another popular internet slang phrase – NSFW.
NSFW stands for Not Safe For Work, and is used to warn users of content that is not good bto play out loud or in front of others in the workplace.
- For example, after NBA player D’Angelo Russell left the court injured, one Twitter user wrote: “nah nfs i need a dlo update” the next day, meaning they took the news seriously and wanted an immediate update on the player’s condition.
