Residents on Spain’s La Palma island braced for the possibility of larger earthquakes on Wednesday 27th Oct 2021, adding to the damage caused by a volcano that has been spewing lava for more than five weeks. An Earthquake of about 4.6 magnitude has hit the island a day after the 4.9 magnitude quake, the biggest of the hundreds that have happened beneath La Palma since the volcano’s Sept. 19 eruption, according to seismologists.
So yet, the earthquakes have been small enough or distant enough beneath La Palma to cause no damage other than to increase the island’s residents’ concern. On three other segments of the Canary Islands, an archipelago off the coast of northwest Africa, the Tuesday earthquake was felt up to 60 miles which is about 96 kilometers away.
Given the recent depth of around 12 kilometers (7.4 miles) and magnitude, which reach a magnitude of 6, the scientific committee has been warning for more than a week that we could see earthquakes. Mara Jos Blanco who is the director of Spain’s National Geographic Institute on the Canary Islands has told Spanish national broadcaster RTVE.
The Molten rock flows from the Cumbre Vieja volcano have forced the evacuation of over 7,500 people and destroyed over 2,000 structures, largely residences. Over 900 hectares (2,200 acres) of primarily farmland have been covered by lava rivers, with one large flow stretching the island into the Atlantic as it cools.
There have been no fatalities as a result of the eruption. Aside from needing to sweep up volcanic ash, life for La Palma’s 85,000 residents goes on as usual, except in one section on the island’s western side.
Note that the La palma island’s most recent eruption back in 1971 which has lasted 24 days. The longest La Palma Island earthquake has happened for 47 days in 1949. The current action is this year’s La Palma Island earthquake 2021 has been going on for 39 days as of the day this post and shows no signs of slowing down at the time. Kindly come back to this post for updates on the La Palma Island.
