Two top government officials in the Ondo State Ministry of Women Affairs have been arrested, according to the Daily Post.
They were apprehended on suspicion of snatching and selling a kid from a mentally ill mother in Ondo state.
After Toyin Olabiwonninu submitted for adoption, the suspects, Sarumi Adeyemi, a Director in the ministry, and Florence Bosede Orisamehin, a senior employee in the same ministry, were accused of selling the infant for N1 million to one Toyin Olabiwonninu whom currently has flee out of the country.
After the baby’s mother, Deborah Iretioluwa Olorundare, a homeless and mentally challenged woman, was transported to the hospital by good Samaritans following the delivery of the kid on the street, the infant was given over to the two government officials by MM Catholic Hospital in Ondo town.
The child’s Mother Deborah Iretioluwa, who was transferred to a psychiatric facility in Akure, Ondo state capital, raised the alarm when she insisted on giving birth to a girl child instead of the male infant handed to her by the accused four months later.
Following pressure from Olorundare’s family and suspicion from officials at the Ondo State Psychiatric Hospital over the suspects’ failure to bring the child to the hospital for bonding with her mother, the Department of State Services (DSS) launched an investigation, which revealed that the minisrer has a ‘child trafficking syndicate.’
Akinnuoye Akinwumi, who is a medical practitioner at the psychiatric hospital, claimed that despite pressure and repeated requests, the ministry’s employees refused to bring the infant during the patient’s four months under their care.
On discharge, the doctor had sent a social worker to go with the patient to the ministry in order to witness the handing over of the baby.
Surprisingly, the officers of the ministry took them to a private orphanage along Ondo road where an imbecile male baby was given to the patient but this baby was rejected by the patient because she insisted that she delivered a baby girl,
he said.
