Abimbola Oyeyemi, who is the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, had identified the suspect as Ojo Akinola Iyanu in a statement released on Thursday.
According to Oyeyemi,
The suspect was apprehended on October 26 at the Ogun State Institute of Technology, Igbesa, in the state’s Ado Odo Ota Local Government Area.
This was in response to solid intelligence acquired by the authorities that some students affiliated with a cult had finalized plans to disrupt a school examination that had been rescheduled following the resolution of a problem between the school administration and the students.
Because they had not prepared for the examination, some of the student cultists devised a scheme to prevent the examination from taking place,
A police official said in a statement.
In response to the intelligence, the DPO at Igbesa, SP Abayomi Adeniji, decided, in concert with other security agencies, to thoroughly screen all pupils before entering the test venue, starting at the main gate.
The suspect and another person later identified as “Aloma” were intercepted carrying a black bag while the screening was taking place, according to the police spokeswoman. The second boy took to his heels while inspecting the bag, and Ojo Akinola Iyanu was swiftly apprehended immediately. Reports were that one locally produced pistol loaded with one live round was recovered from the bag.
During questioning, he admitted to being a member of the feared Aye confraternity. He further admitted that his gang chose to disrupt the examination because it came unexpectedly and caught them off guard,
according to the police spokeswoman.
In response to the arrest, the state’s Commissioner of Police, Lanre Bankole, ordered that the suspect be immediately transferred to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department for a thorough investigation.
The police commissioner also ordered that the group’s other members be tracked down and brought to justice.
