Jose Pereira lawyer has told Reuters on Tuesday that the former president of oil refiner Citgo, a U.S. subsidiary of Venezuelan oil major PDVSA, suffered a small heart attack in prison in Caracas and was later taken to the hospital.
All About Jose Pereira Case
Jose Pereira is one of six former corporate executives jailed by Venezuelan authorities in 2017, all of whom are naturalized US citizens, on charges of executing an unfair debt refinancing contract.
According to Pereira’s lawyer, Maria Alejandra Poleo, Pereira has “moderate cardiopathy” and is stable.
Jose Pereira and his former colleagues were released from house arrest ten days ago, after Venezuelan government envoy Alex Saab was extradited to the United States from Cape Verde.
“We got a call from our dad today, he’s been freed from the clinic and sent to El Helicoide (jail), it’s unclear what occurred, he says he doesn’t remember anything,”
Pereira’s family wrote on Twitter.
Requests for comment to the Information Ministry and the Attorney General’s Office were not immediately returned.
Citgo’s supervisory boards have met with US authorities in an attempt to extend Washington’s protection while the company negotiates with creditors, according to Reuters News.
