The 78-year-old Durst, who was recently sentenced to life in prison in California for killing a confidante who helped him cover up the slaying, was indicted for second-degree murder in the New York City suburbs just weeks after an investigator in the case filed a criminal complaint against him.
The Scion of a millionaire real estate family Prosecutors said that Robert Durst was indicted on a murder charge on Monday 1st November 2021 in the death of his first wife, Kathie Durst, who vanished nearly four decades ago.
Robert Durst was relocated to a state prison medical unit last Thursday, last two weeks after being hospitalized with COVID-19 Virus and on a ventilator after his sentence in the Los Angeles case.
In a statement announcing the charge, Westchester District Attorney Mimi Rocah revealed that a warrant had been issued for his arrest in the murder of Kathie Durst.
Kathleen Durst’s family and friends were left with sadness, anguish, and questions after she vanished on January 31, 1982, according to Rocah, which has contributed to their unwavering pursuit of justice for the past 39 years.
Durst, who suffers from a variety of medical conditions, spent much of his trial and sentence hearing in a wheelchair in California. Because he has hearing difficulties, he reads his lawyers’ queries via a tablet and provides live transcriptions.
Durst denied killing Kathie Durst during his August testimony in the Los Angeles trial. When her medical school called to say she hadn’t attended to class, he assumed she was out having fun and speculated that drug use could be the cause.
After HBO aired a documentary in 2015 in which the eccentric heir appeared admitted killing people, going off camera and whispering to himself on a live microphone: Killed them all, of course, Kathie Durst’s 1982 disappearance reawakened public curiosity.
When Kathie Durst was last seen, she was 29 years old and in her final months of medical school. She and her husband, Robert Durst, who was 38 at the time, had been married for over nine years and lived in South Salem, a Lewisboro suburb. Her remains were never discovered. In 2017, she was declared legally dead at the request of her family.
The Dursts family owns about 16 million square feet of real estate in New York and Philadelphia, including a 10% investment in One World Trade Center, formerly known as the Freedom Tower in Manhattan. In 2006, family members paid $65 million for Robert Durst’s share in the company.
