For the first time, the life and legacy of Indian independence struggle hero Mahatma Gandhi will be honored on a British special collectors’ coin, according to UK Treasury Chief Rishi Sunak.
The spherical coin, which bears India’s national flower, the lotus, as well as a famous quotation from Gandhi,
My life is my message.
This is now part of the Royal Mint’s Diwali collection.
This is the first time the man known for his nonviolent rallies for Indian independence will be honored on an official United Kingdom coin.
Sunak said in a statement,
As a practicing Hindu, I am happy to release this currency during Diwali. Mahatma Gandhi was a key figure in the Indian freedom movement, and it’s wonderful to see a British coin honoring his incredible life for the first time.
The 5-pound coin will be made of gold and silver and will be legal currency, albeit it will not be circulated much. It will be available starting Thursday, in time for Diwali, alongside 1g (0.035 oz) and 5g (0.18 oz) gold bars and the United Kingdom’s first gold bar featuring Lakshmi, the Hindu goddess of wealth.
Last year, Sunak commissioned a new Diversity Built Britain 50-penny coin as part of a drive to fairly represent the achievements of minority cultures in all aspects of life.
