As vaccine coverage has expanded to reach more than 70% of the population in Japan, the number of illnesses and deaths has decreased considerably over the months.
During an August surge fueled by the virulent Delta variation, new infections peaked at almost 25,000 per day.
To prepare for a possible return wave of the virus this years winter, the government will begin booster vaccine doses next month and is attempting to get pill-based treatments for milder cases in order to avoid hospitalizations.
