In the most powerful volcanic eruption on the island of Java, which occurred on Saturday and was caused by heavy rainfall.
Today, Sunday, December 5th, the dead toll from the eruption has grown to 13. 7 more people have still to be found.
The search for the missing 7 was complicated on Sunday by smoldering debris and heavy muck.
After a rapid eruption Saturday precipitated by heavy rains, Mount Semeru in East Java province blasted thick columns of ash more than 12,000 meters into the sky, while burning gas and lava streamed down its slopes. Several settlements were engulfed in ashfall.
The eruption was initiated by a thunderstorm and days of rain, which eroded and eventually destroyed the lava dome atop the 3,676-meter Semeru, according to Eko Budi Lelono, the geological survey center’s director.
