Prosecutors in Germany allegedly can’t prove Christian Brueckner is responsible for the disappearance of Madeleine McCann.
Authorities there are sure that Brueckner is the man responsible for the capture and killing of the child from her family’s holiday apartment in Portugal in 2007.
But the 46-year-old paedophile hasn’t been charged three years after being named as the investigation’s prime suspect.
But now, the Mirror reports a close friend claims authorities can’t prove Brueckner is responsible.
The outlet claims evidence has been hard to come by with authorities now re-interviewing associates of Brueckner.
Recently, speaking to the Mirror, the friend who lived with Brueckner in the Algarve – and who recently spoke with detectives – said: “They believe Chris did it, but they told me they don’t have proof.
“That’s why they are going back over old interviews. When they spoke to me they were very open about what the situation is.”
They said that police kept asking the same questions over and over again, and felt that the investigation was “struggling”.
They felt that police had “nothing new”.
A second pal, who asked not to be named, said they too had been asked to go over details, adding they were “surprised” to be contacted again.
They claimed that the authorities told them they wanted to make sure nothing had been missed out the first time.
Brueckner is currently in jail for seven years for rape having carried out a slew of sex crimes in Portugal from 2000 to 2017, but denies any involvement in the disappearance of Maddie.
The Mirror reports that the case could be turned over to new prosecutors following complexities regarding German legal jurisdictions.
Brueckner’s lawyer claims that the location of his last registered address is wrong and as such wants the current prosecutors removed.
He is understood to be readying a formal application for the case to be transferred to Lower Saxony.
The current prosecutors, from Braunschweig where Brueckner’s last known address is believed to have been, told the Mirror there is no news to report regarding Maddie.
“We are conducting the investigations as we deem appropriate and necessary,” they said.
The then-three-year-old Maddie vanished from her family’s Praia da Luz holiday apartment in May 2007.
